Sicily became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia after a referendum where more than 75% of Sicily voted in favour of the annexation on 21 October 1860 (but not everyone was allowed to vote). As a result of the Kingdom of Italy proclamation, Sicily became part of the kingdom on 17 March 1861. During these years, Sicily was hit by large earthquakes.

The most useful records you can consult at provincial state archives (usually open weekday mornings) are vital statistics acts of birth, marriage and death between 1820 and 1860. Concentrate on acts of birth and marriage rather than acts of death, which do not provide as much accurate information which will advance a lineage.

I have seen a lot of posts on Facebook recently where people have asked how to find Italian birth records, do I have to pay etc. The best place to start in my opinion is the Italian Record site Antenati.. This site has been digitizing the Italian Civil records that date back to 1809.
